Personal Background

Rick is a married father to two adult daughters, both of whom were born in Squamish and still live there. He is also a proud grandfather, and enjoys time spent with his family and his many friends. Rick is a former rock climber, and still a hiker, biker and back-country skier. He and his wife Diddi spend much time and energy on their Brackendale garden and house, which they built themselves in 1974.

Volunteer Background

In addition to his work with the School Board, Rick has been a member of the Squamish Social Planning Council, and is the past Chairperson of Communities that Care, Squamish. Further back, Rick has been involved in the Howe Sound Co-op, the Howe Sound Drama Society, and was an early and active member of Squamish Search and Rescue.

Professional Background

Rick’s entire career has been involved with public education. Since starting as a teacher in Squamish in 1971, Rick has also done the following:

- Outdoor Education Coordinator (in charge of Coast Mountain Outdoor School)

- Elementary Science Coordinator

- Vice Principal at several schools

- Principal at Myrtle Philip Community School and Stawamus Elementary School

- Practice Teaching supervisor (part-time) for the University of Victoria

School Board Activities and Interests

Rick has a variety of interests with regard to the complexities of operating an effective school system. But overall, Rick’s interest is in the development and implementation of a District Education Plan ensuring that all students experience dynamic, relevant, and engaging learning. In other words, we want to provide daily classroom experiences about which students are excited and enthusiastic. By so doing, we effectively serve the interests of students of all backgrounds and abilities.
