Whistler Schools to Celebrate
Energy Savings May 15
May 10, 2006
Whistler's three public schools have demonstrated that small conservation efforts can yield big energy savings.
Whistler Secondary School, Myrtle Philip Community School and Spring Creek Community School together have saved $9,500 in energy costs during the first five months of the Destination Conservation program initiated last November. The schools will be celebrating this achievement May 15 at a special event featuring a presentation by four-time Olympian Margaret Langford who represented Canada in the white water kayak slalom event. She will be speaking about clean air, climate change and sports.
*We are delighted with the way students, staff and parents have embraced this program and with the savings that have been achieved," said Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Edwards. Facilities Director Rick Hume and his staff are to be commended for initiating the program and playing an active role in its success. I would also like to thank Terasen Gas for sponsoring the program.
Destination Conservation is a lifestyle program designed to help students, staff and parents work together to reduce energy, water consumption and waste production. Students are trained to investigate their school buildings to determine their energy efficiency and then create lifestyle campaigns to reduce energy consumption.
For example, Whistler Secondary recently experienced an "Ice Age For a Day" where the heat was turned down by 3 degrees C. and everyone wore sweaters and hats. Whistler Secondary and Spring Creek also participated in "Lights Out Canada", a national program which encouraged schools across the country to turn off the lights whenever they didn*t need to be on.
Myrtle Philip held a week-long "Layer Up" campaign where the heat settings were turned down and everyone wore an extra layer of clothing. They tracked the energy usage and demonstrated that significant savings can be achieved as a result of wearing just one extra layer of clothing.
The May 15 celebration will be held at Whistler Secondary from 9 am to 12 pm and will include district and school presentations and games for students. Each Whistler school will receive $300 for its energy saving efforts.
